11/13/2020 2 Comments Confidence in the One Who CallsSeveral years ago, I was part of a women’s life group through the church I attended. When the leader decided to step down, she asked me to take over the group. Immediately, I questioned my ability to do it. I was scared and kept telling myself I was not prepared. Because of my own life issues, I was uncertain that I could lead a group of women in navigating theirs. I recall praying for days, telling God the same things I was telling myself. When I finally stopped fretting, God told me it was what He was calling me to do and reminded me that He was with me. I found encouragement in that and agreed to become the life group leader. When God calls us to a place, we have to be confident, not in ourselves, but in the One who is calling us. Concentrating on what we feel we aren’t and what we think we don’t have makes us hesitant to step into where God is calling us to be. What does it take to focus on God instead of ourselves? Mary serves as an excellent example.
God chose Mary to be Jesus’ mother. Although she was startled and had some questions when Gabriel told her, Mary listened to what God was calling her to do. (Luke 1:26-36) In doing so, she learned how it would happen, in light of her being a virgin. Like Mary, when God calls us to do something, we must quiet ourselves and spend time hearing from Him about it. When we do, we get direction for the call and assurance that it will happen, no matter what our current circumstances are. She also acknowledged her identity. “I am the Lord’s servant,” she said. (Luke 1:38) As Mary did, we have to remind ourselves who we are—that God created us and that we are His children. This personal declaration will help to quiet the opposing voices (even our own) as we journey along the path He takes us. Mary then agreed with what God had spoken about her life. As a result, the Savior of the world was born. God’s Word tells us that He has a plan for each of our lives. (Jeremiah 29:11) To do what God has planned for us to do, we also have to agree. Our response has to be like Mary’s, “May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38) I’m thankful I agreed with God about being a life group leader. It drew me closer to Him, I learned more about my giftings, and it allowed me to develop relationships with a group of women who remain a support system for each other still today.
